October

How delightful it is to see squirrels
scuttle around grassy graveyards,
making tiny rackets over auburn
leaves, playing hide and seek behind tired
 tombs. Fresh in the morning,
dew still loitering,
the child sun seeks out cracks and crevasses,
phantoms and little girls with little flowers –
unaware of the greater depth that
this ground takes – which from above,
remain faithful to the loveliest of autumn days.
